RASPBERRIES
Fresh (Capitol)
Ever get lonely for that energetic rush of naivety which accompanied younger years?
Well, perhaps this Ohioan quartet can muster that long-gone, carefree innocence. No talk of war, ecology or Woman's Lib—just normal boy/girl stuff.
Their and harmonies are not unlike a mid sixties English vocal group like, say, the Hollies. Instrumentally, they've got a proficiently primitive sound with a ringing rhythm guitar filling out the gaps. But there's no heavy guitar riffs or unnecessary accompaniment and most of their solos are simple, and memorable.
Overall, they never clutter things up which makes the album easy to listen to.
But it does entertain, and as well as being admirable singers and musicians, the band's songwriting is especially effective.
Everything about the Raspberries is so right: it all clicks.
The songs arc short and to the point, and they have hooks. If you appreciated "I'm Alive" and "Look Through Any Window" by the Hollies, then Fresh is an album worth owning.
