Pop master finally gets his due

By Greg Prato

Eric Carmen's lengthy career has seen many ups and downs. Leading one of power pop's all-time great acts…heck, make that one of rock's all-time great acts (the Raspberries), launching a solo career as a balladeer ("All By Myself"), then reinventing himself as an 80s pop prince (Dirty Dancing). All of these eras and more are thoroughly examined on his first-ever Carmen bio.

Co-written by the webmaster of Carmen's site, Bernie Hogya, and longtime Raspberries aficionado Ken Sharp (who previously penned the exceptional Raspberries biog), this 408-page book includes a wealth of interviews, insight, and rare photographs.

Raised near Cleveland, Ohio, Carmen developed an appreciation of classical music early on, before being transfixed by the Beatles, resulting in his develop-
ment as a fine power pop composer in his own right. Name-checked as a major influence by such acts as Kiss and Cheap Trick over the years, the Raspberries were one of rock's most underrated acts, and their story is this book's highpoint, complete with hits, misses, close-calls, and ultimately…an ugly
fight in a parking lot. Along the way, such interesting tales appear as jamming with Keith Moon, meeting John Lennon (who helped mix a Raspberries album), and a near-collaboration with Elton John.

Lovingly assembled and a fine read.
