| RASPBERRIES STILL FRESH
By Tony Michaels I really enjoyed Ed Masley's article on one of my favorite bands of all time, The Raspberries. This underrated and underappreciated band deserved to be huge back in the day. Great songs with some of the best "hooks" ever, unbelievable vocals and a kick-ass power pop sound...wow! Eric Carmen has to be in the Top 10 best pop vocalists of all time. Jim Bonfanti, a sweet combination of Ringo Starr and Keith Moon, is one of the best rock drummers ever. Wally Bryson, killer guitar work. David Smalley lived in Indiana, Pa.—my stompin' grounds—back around '67-'68 after he hit with Wally and Jim as The Choir and "It's Cold Outside." As barely a teenager back in the summer of '72, I can remember exactly where I was when I heard their classic tune, "Go All the Way." I was on a baseball field and I had to rush to the radio to check the song and the band out. Same type of thing happened the following year when I heard "Tonight." I was playing basketball and ran straight off of the court (in the middle of a pickup game!) to glue my ear to the radio. Those two singles, along with their "Overnight Sensation" and "Let's Pretend," are among the best singles ever, I think. Hopefully—with folks like Mr. Masley giving them good press—the Raspberries will finally get the credit and the fans they deserve! Pittsburgh Post-Gazette / January 15, 2005
