Raspberries fans who prefer Eric rocking out on "Ecstasy" or "Tonight" would be the first to suggest that he had gone "soft" when he went solo. Understandable when you consider the monster back-to-back hits of "All By Myself" and "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again"—both slow ballads! But the four Raspberries LPs had their share of slow ballads, too: "I Saw The Light," "Don't Wanna Say Goodbye," and "Starting Over" to name just a few.
For those who bothered to crank up Eric's first solo album, they heard the power chords loud and clear on songs like "No Hard Feelings" and this little tune, titled appropriately "That's Rock 'N' Roll," which was a monster-sized (and sugar-coated) hit for teen hearthrob Shaun Cassidy before Eric ever even thought about releasing it as a single of his own.
Perhaps overtly intended to bury Shaun's limp recording of the rocker once and for all, this live performance from The Midnight Special shows off Eric's ability to continue to "rock out" on demand. And "rock out" he does! I especially love his slide guitar salvo that opens the song! In this electrifying rendition, Eric shows off his abilities on guitar as well as on vocals. Can I get a Steve Marriott "HAH!" from the balcony, please? I thought so. Enjoy!
