Right smack in the middle of Capitol Records' promotion of Raspberries to teeny-bopper magazines like 16 and Fave, Eric, Wally, Jim and Dave made a statement of their own. There, before a national television audience of millions, the band kicked all the teen girls in braces right between the eyes and played an eight-minute musical tour de force that they hoped would make believers of even the most jaded rock fans as well as critics.
The great thing about Don Kirshner's Rock Concert is that each band actually performed live. No lip-syncing was allowed. So when you're watching this amazing video keep that in mind. Also worth noting is that Raspberries was one of the first groups to tour with mellotrons to reproduce the sound of strings. That's the reason why a song like "I Can Remember" can come alive on stage in 1973!
These talented twenty-somethings are not playing three-chord rock on this number. No. "I Can Remember" is more akin to something by a progressive rock band like Genesis than Chuck Berry. And they seem to do it here with little effort. Eric's keyboards and singing, Wally magnificent guitar work, Dave's solid bass and Jim's pounding beat make "I Can Remember" one of the best tracks on the group's debut LP and treat to watch in this great live performance. Enjoy!
