On February 9, 1964, an estimated 73 million viewers tuned in to The Ed Sullivan Show to hear the Beatles play five songs: "All My Loving," "Till There Was You," "She Loves You," "I Saw Her Standing There" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand." It was a moment that changed history, as well as the life of a teenaged boy with classical piano training in an Ohio suburb.
"When the Beatles did The Ed Sullivan Show…it flipped me out," recalled Eric. He realized that, "There was no such thing as an electric piano in rock and roll back then," so he switched briefly to the drums and settled on the guitar. All of which led up to his forming the legendary power-pop band Raspberries: "My idea for the band was if you were going to form a band, why not pattern it after the most successful band there ever was, and that was the Beatles. The Beatles were the best."
Who could have predicted that one day he would be performing on the very same spot as the Beatles did on that historic night some 36 years later? Not only would he be on the stage of the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City but he'd be there with one of the Beatles, Ringo Starr.
They performed a spirited version of "With A Little Help From My Friends" featuring Eric on keyboards/backing vocals, Jack Bruce on bass/backing vocals, Dave Edmunds on guitar, Simon Kirke on drums and Mark Rivera on percussion/backing vocals.
